Learning 2.0 - The End

Well, I am here to say that I have completed the learning 2.0 activities. I feel like I have accomplished a huge task. These lessons, were stretched out over the semester so it felt like it took forever to finish them, but it's done NOW.

Today we had a celebration in the library lobby. We enjoyed cake, cookies, hot chocolate, and lemonade. We also enjoyed the wii systems. Our coordinator and tech guy set the two gaming systems up on the big screens in the lobby. I have played tennis and lost; boxed in two matches and won one, then lost the second game; and at last I have done the DDR till my legs hurt.

Overall, this program was fun and interesting. I have learned a lot!!! I feel more savvy in technology, plus I am excited to use all the great things I have learned. It's been fun and hopefully we can do more lessons as new opportunities become available.

Love this video

OMG, the video below is so cute. I can't believe that this couple had time to choreograph this dance in the midst of all their wedding planning. On the Ellen show she asked this guy what he was doing before the wedding he said, "in the bathroom w/ the door shut practicing this dance." Well watch and enjoy, it's great.

#20 Mashups & #21 Mashup Editors

For the last two lessons #20 & #21 on mashups we were to explore the different mashups on the web. In the last lesson we were to create our own mashup.
I initially went to the Mashup Directory, but didn't have much luck in finding anything interesting. So I decided to look at the Ten Best Flickr Mashups. I first tried to use Captioner, but guess what?? It didn't work. I later found out that it didn't work because I was using a photo that had been set to private. So I decided to then use Spell with flickr (see the result below).
I really liked using Spell with flickr. I don't think I will use mashups for alot things, but I do think that some of the options available will be a nice touch to add to my blog and pictures.

#19 - Podcasts

Lesson #19 was to listen to a podcast, so that is what I did. I looked at all three podcast directories that were listed in this lesson. The three recommended podcast directories in this lesson were: I had trouble finding what I was looking for. So I decided another good laugh would work. I found the podcast for Larry the Cable Guy and "Shopping at Wal-Mart".

I personally don't care for podcasts. I prefer the idea of YouTube just because I am a visual person. There is something about a podcasts that bothers me, sort of like talk radio (unless it's Dr. Laura). I even noticed that when doing this learning 2.0 lessons, I hated the ones where I had to listen to the podcast. I wanted to just read the text and be done. Maybe I need some patience :-)

#18 Video - Discover YouTube

This lesson has far been my most favorite lesson of all. I have really enjoyed watching YouTube. So this week's lesson required us to find a clip on YouTube that we liked and blog about it, so here ya go!!!

The clip I am posting is "Larry the Cable Guy - The Night Before Christmas".
I love Christmas and since everyone is so worried about being "POLITICALLY CORRECT" I couldn't resist passing this one up. I know that Larry the Cable Guy can be rude and crude, but who cares. We all need a good laugh now and then. Maybe this is my redneck country girl side that is coming out. I hope you all enjoy it. Git r' done!!!!!!

#17 - Processing Words on the Web

First off I want to praise "Google Docs". I recently started using Google Docs this semester in my HEA 345 Drugs & Society class. Another student and I decided to work together in creating our study guides. This way we both were able to type up the questions and answers and share them with each other. By using google docs it saved me time and headaches.
As for the Google docs applications, I personally think it is very easy and user-friendly. I also like the fact that I don't have to have my flash drive with me all the time. I can just log in no matter where I am and type away. My life is all about convenience and time management and this is just another benefit for me.
I think that this application would be very good for professors to use in the classroom. A could see a professor posting their study guides this way. Then the students could look up the answers and post them so that each person is not individually looking up all the answers, but they all could participate and benefit from the results. Which means more time reading the necessary material in class and the chance to study for exams early.
I personally recommend Google Docs to any non-traditional student who is juggling the responsibilities of work, school and family!!!

#16 - Intro to Web-Based Applications

Web-based applications, so many to choose from!!!! The first part of this weeks lesson was to visit a blog at UCD Library 2 go and read some of the posts that the have published. I looked over this blog and thought that is was very interesting. About 4 years ago here in the reference department created a blog for our team members of our frequently answered questions. This was a nice tool for us to go to when we needed an answer fast, however the enthusiasm of this died fast.
The UCD Library created this blog for their students though, which makes this more exciting. I am not for sure how much the UCD students use it and I don't know that EKU students would use it but it's a nice concept.
One blogpost I found interesting was the one on Snippy. Snippy is apparently a way to cut and paste is any shape possible not just highlighting a section of a document and pasting it. I thought this might be a cool application to use when I am typing out captions for my scrapbook. I have not tried this application yet, but I have definitely added it to my list of things to do. (Like I have time for anything else) :-)

Bill Mecks - Weather 101

My daughters school was visited by Bill Meck of LEX 18 news to present his weather 101 class. B really enjoyed this class and learned a lot of information. Actually so much that she would not shut up last night. So when LEX 18 comes to the schools they video the class. B is sitting in the back and I actually can't see her but my best friend is sitting in the front right hand corner.

# 15 - Get your hands dirty in the wiki sandbox

This weeks lesson in learning web 2.0 was to play with using a wiki. I went to the the EKU Libraries learning 2.0 wiki and listed two of my favorite television shows. By the way, I really love "Desperate Housewives" and "Reba".
Making changes to the wiki was really easy and quick. As I said in the earlier post I like the idea of having just "one go to place" where many different people can edit the page. This is so much simpler than trying to keep track of emails going around to a large group of people. I am not really for sure that I will use a wiki for personal use any time soon, but I am sure that I will use one in the future. I really see the potential that this tool can offer.

#14 - Gettin' wiki with it!

This weeks lesson is discovering the Wiki. To find out more information about Wiki's click here.
Basically a Wiki is a place where a group of people can type information about a topic that allows each person to edit each others information or just add new information. (hope that makes sense)
I think that using a Wiki can be very beneficial in many settings such as between friend, family and totally in the workplace.
I looked at some library wiki's and like being able to see suggestions and things going on at other libraries. I liked the idea of publishing a thought or idea on a topic in a wiki and then getting other peoples feedback by having them edit, change or add to my thoughts. Wiki's can be very useful and I am looking forward to using this application in my field of interest in the future.

#13 - Tagging, part 2

Exercise 1 - Folksonomy
Basically my conclusion on folksonomy is this is just tagging. I like the idea of being able to organize, but tagging is good, but to a to minimum. Some of the websites I have seen that allow tagging is just crazy. For example Librarything, I loaded my books into my account and started to look at what other people are reading and tagging about. I like tags that really relate to the topic, not just a tag like "fun" or "exiting". So overall tags are okay, but some people are having a bit too much fun when tagging!

Exercise 2 - Encore
I did a search at a library webpage that has the Encore software. My search was on HPV, most of the tags that were displayed made perfect since. However I was surprised to find that there was not a tag for teens, females, women, but there was a tag on men.

Exercise 3 - del.icio.us
I really didn't understand the concept del.icio.us until I watched the video explaining the benefits of it. At this point in my life I don't have a need to bookmark my favorite sites. I do think that if I was doing specific research on a topic that this could benefit me by allowing all the websites of my interest to be loaded into one site. Plus the ability to search and use the websites that other people are using about the same area of interest as myself.

#12 - Tagging

For this web 2.0 lesson we were to explore the idea of tagging. What in the world is tagging, is what you may be wondering. To learn what exactly tagging is click here.

In this lesson we were to do a search in Google and then do the same search in eQuest, the library's catalog. Since I am a community health education major, I decided to search for something that is a hot topic in my area of study. I did a search in Google on HPV. This search resulted in over 10 pages of results. The results were an array of resources such as scholarly information, newspaper articles, pictures, to statistical information on HPV and the new vaccine. I did the same search in the library's catalog, but my results list was a lot smaller. How about this, I only found one book and one government document that discussed HPV. There are a few reasons why this may have occurred, in particular the keyword HPV might not have been a good search term to use. The library catalog suggested subjects terms such as sex, sexual ethics, or "sex and law."

In my opinion I think tagging is a form of cataloging. Actually I think it is a better way of cataloging. The logistics behind tagging is good, but the key to this is to use a lot of different words in tagging. Tagging will not be very beneficial with just a few words. The old saying "the more the merrier" can be applied to this lesson of tagging.

Leadership Training - "Disney Style"

First off anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge Disney fan. So the opportunity for me to attend this Disney workshop was a great gift from the library. I have been asking for about two years now to attend a workshop/training session that focused on how to be a good supervisor and leader. It just so happens that Disney offered this training workshop right here at EKU. How lucky am I??

This training was not like any other training I have ever experienced. It was fun and interactive without making me participate in silly games. The presenters were interesting, motivated and knowledgeable in their expertise. They were able to keep my attention and keep me wanting to hear more.
The first session on "Leadership" was great. I was able to reflect on what makes a good leader by Disney's standards and by looking at my former supervisors to see what it was that they possessed to make them so great. I realized that I don't ask for feedback from my student employees enough. They are the experts in certain areas because they deal with circumstances every day. So why would I make a decision on something, if I have no experience in that area? This is a question I ask myself regularly now in making decisions that will affect the student employees.
The second session on "Management" was good too. Unfortunately, I had a prior engagement and had to leave, so I only experienced about 30 minutes of this session. I did get to think about what makes a employee good and how to choose the right employee for my area.
The third session on "Service" was very important to me. I have always been in the business of customer service. I really strive to make every customer that I interact with feel special. I took some of the discussion points and asked myself this question about my service at the Research desk. "What is my service theme?" I hope that I show each patron my attention, courtesy, respect and a personalized feeling while fulfilling their research needs.
The last session of the day was on "Loyalty." What is loyalty and how does it affect my job? I want the patrons to be loyal by coming back every time they need research help. I hope that in the end they seek me out because they are grateful for the experience I offer them. However, if not that is fine as long as they have a great experience at the Research desk from all the staff, faculty and student employees that work our service point.

At first I thought how on earth will I be able to compare the wonderful world of Disney to EKU Libraries. Well, actually it was pretty easy. We both have a service that we offer. We both want to be the best in offering that service. So we are similar! The presenters constantly referred to Disney as an "experience" not just a vacation, ride, or anything in particular. Don't we want to offer an overall "experience" here at the library from purchasing, finding, printing, checking out, and returning the materials.
The experience that the student has the moment they enter our doors will determine if they will be loyal to us.

#11 Search Tools

This next lesson in web 2.0 was about search tools. In particular Rollyo. I am sure you are wondering what in the heck is Rollyo. Let me just say it took me all day to come up with how I was going to explain what Rollyo was because I was completely lost at first. Rollyo is like having my very own search engine. Most people including myself would just go to Google and type in a search about a topic and get results from different websites; don't get me wrong you can still do that but it's hard to know what websites you can trust. By having a Rollyo account you are allowed to make a search engine with only websites you trust and use on a regular basis, then search within only those websites.

So I created my search engine, but I really don't know what to put there. I don't have a group of websites that I search regularly. I see that this tool can be useful, but I am just not for sure how I can use it yet. I hope that after our brown bag meeting on Friday here at the library, I can actually find a reason to use it.
I hope to repost about this new tool later on.

#10 Do your own LibraryThing

In learning web 2.0 our next lesson was to explore LibraryThing. I actually started my personal account with this website about a month ago. I always start something new with the idea that I will try it for a month or so and then determine if I will like or use it and if not then I will delete the account. I had the same mindset with this account. I love to read so I do checkout a lot of books and I still buy books, especially books from my favorite authors. Previously I had an excel spreadsheet with all this information. But now I have all my books cataloged using LibraryThing. Its easier to add books or catalog books using LibraryThing as opposed to an excel spreadsheet where I have to enter all the info about the book and author. (OMG, I just said it was easier to have it cataloged - that is such a librarian thing to say!!!) (Someone please check my pulse and temp)
Anyways guess what? I really like LibraryThing. I am able to see what other readers have said about books that I am reading and I like how it suggests other titles that I should read according to the books I like. I would recommend to anybody who likes to read or buys a lot of books to try this great source.
View my library catalog. Feel free to leave comments on any the books that I have listed. I have placed tags on all the books I have read, any book without a tag is something that I would like to read in the near future. Enjoy :-)

#9 Finding Feeds

For lesson #9 in our web 2.0 lessons here at EKU Libraries, we were to to add some RSS feeds to our feed reader account that we created in lesson #8.

In choosing which feeds I wanted in my reader account I made a list of some of the websites that I visit on a regular basis. I also used Google to search for some blogs that I think are interesting as a parent. Here are some of the feeds that I enjoy:
News source - Richmond Register
Hollywood Info - People and Go Fug Yourself (Both of these sites are great to read for celebrity dirt)
Blogs - Mom's Daily Dose and Dot Moms (I chose these two blogs over some of the other "mom blogs" because they didn't seem to discuss parenting issues like potty training and other topics that target smaller children. My kids are out of that stage (Hallelujah!!) and I need blog entries that are more for school age kids.

I did try using some of the recommend sites for searching for news feeds and blogs but I thought it was more difficult than using Google. I have mentioned in previous blog entries that I am a Google girl, so if I can find something using Google then I will.

# 8 Make Life "Really Simple" with RSS & a Newsrea...

Our next lesson in Learning web 2.0 here at EKU Libraries was to learn about RSS feeds. What is RSS? For this weeks lesson we had a great video that explains more about RSS, watch the video. Instead of me taking the time (that I don't have) to go to each of my favorite websites to see what's new, I can just go to one place and all the new information is waiting for me.

I have been using bloglines for about two months now, and at first I thought to myself this is not going to work. Little did I know that I would become addicted to it. Since I created the bloglines account my life has been simplified so much. I visit one place anytime I am free instead of 5 or more and all the information that I want is there waiting for me. Since I have been using bloglines for some time, I decided to create a Google Reader account to see how it differs from the bloglines. So far I prefer the Google Reader. I love Google, Gmail and just prefer the "Google way of life." I thought that setting my "feeds" in the Google Reader was easier and simpler than this process in bloglines. I had to many options to choose from in bloglines, whereas in Google Reader I just added the link and I was done. I still have some more exploring to do with Google Reader so later I may find problems in their system that I don't like. I will just have to wait and see.

Here's the challenge to anyone who reads my blog: I recommend that you take a day and make a note of all the websites you visit in one day and calculate the time you spend at each site. I think you will be amazed!! Then create your reader account add your favorite websites and blogs and then see the difference. You will be so thankful not only for the convenience factor, but look at all the time your saving.

#6 - Flickr Photo Fun

Since I am new to Flickr, I just started to visit some of the cool tools that are available. This week's lesson in learning web 2.0 was to create a Flickr account, post some photos, tryout one of the tools available, and then blog about it. I decided to tryout the Trading Card Maker. This tool was really easy and I think it would be a great application to use in the future. It's not something I will do often, but I am sure there will be special pictures that I will want to take extra special time on like the the great picture of the kids I posted today.

Look see the orange, okay look at the picture again see the orange slips! I think that is the best picture yet :-)

#6 Flickr

Today was my first time using Flickr and it was surprisingly easy. I created an account which literally took less than 2 minutes then I uploaded some recent photos. I was really surprised at how easy it was. I know that there are still things I need to learn about this program, but I am excited to do so. Each week that I participate in the Learning 2.0 program here at the EKU Libraries, I feel so much more confident in the things I do and accomplish on the web. This is really a self-esteem boost for anyone who didn't think they were savvy with technology and the internet.

I hope you check out a few pictures I have posted to my blog that I took today. I hope you enjoy them :-)

My favorite past time, other than being a soccer mom

I have added a new picture to my blog, some of you may have seen it on Facebook but I wanted it here too. I thought it was a great picture of Mike and I on the motorcycle. This picture was taken at a stop light while we were at Bike Week 2007 in Daytona Beach.
Most people don't know that the other side of me is a my love for motorcycles and four wheelers. I have always loved to ride four wheelers. There is a difference in riding on the rode and then being in the woods. I think I was a bit nervous about being on the rode next to these great big cars, trucks etc. So when Mike bought the Harley Davidson - 2003 anniversary edition Softail Deuce I swore I would never ride it. After the first 2 minutes on the bike I was sold. Everytime I hear the roar of a Harley, it makes me want to be on ours. This "Harley Momma" loves to ride!!!!

#5 Facebook

In the previous post on "social networking 101" I sort of covered some of the reasons why I prefer Facebook over Myspace.

After listening to the podcast about Facebook I was really shocked to hear the usage statistics between the two sites. I think the thing the attracts more students to use Facebook or login daily is the "homepage." It is a quick place to go to find information about your friends without having to search for it. Many times I login to look only at the homepage, this way if I want to see more I can but if not I just log out. Myspace on the other hand is to hard to find people, the email spam filters are awful, it's not user friendly and most importantly the privacy settings are not that good. I have recently thought about deleting my Myspace account because I hate to even check it. There is one other thing that I don't like about Myspace and that is the backgrounds you can set. Some people have so much crap and colors on their page that you can't even read the text (maybe that is the reason, someone please enlighten me on this:-)). I like the fact that on Facebook every thing is the same color and it's easy to read.

I do like Ning's suggestion on her blog that it would be nice if we could add music to our pictures or even our page (that would be cool). I think music can tell you a lot about a person, so that would be a nice feature to add. Overall I would recommend Facebook.

Monday Madness--actually all week madness!!

Yesterday was such a crazy day for me. After working all day I rushed to get the kids, then shuffled them off to swim lessons till 6, then rushed A to VBS. Luckily the soccer dad had to step in and take B to soccer practice till 7 (Soccer mom duties had to be taken away, becasue I had other duties, like teaching a VBS class). Let me just say I love teaching my Sunday school class of pre-k & kindergarteners, which is usually 7 students, but 12 students last night was a bit exhausting. How do these great school teachers do it every day? Maybe they have patience, I apparently was not blessed in that area like I thought.
Anyways, life will be like this all week for me. We have swim lessons for two weeks. VBS is only this week, so I will survive. I kinda dread it every year at first becasue I know how exhausting it will be, but the rewards are worth it every year. I am sure it will be great and the Lord will give me the strength to do it, he always does.
Other news: I am excited my first summer class is over, but on the other hand my second class has started. It is more time consuming than I thought it would be so that is a bummer. I know it will all be worth in the end. I just keep telling myself "I think I can, I think I can" ;-)
Gotta go - Signing off (like that don't ya)

#4 Social Networking 101

I really enjoyed this weeks video called "Social Networking in Plain English." I thought that this video did a great job in portraying exactly how online social networking connects people but not really. I think back to when the web and everything online came about and how people panicked over the personal connections that were going to be lost. (Frankly some people may have been happy to of lost that connection ;-) haha)
Anyways, this is a way to gain that connection back and to feel that you are part of the life of a person. I enjoy seeing what other people are doing and the exciting things going on in their life without having to call them via phone (Soccer moms don't have time to talk on the phone, please!)
I love my facebook page alot more than my Myspace page. I think Myspace is too clunky, there are too many ads and really the privacy filters aren't that great. Facebook on the other hand is really easy to use and for some reason I feel safer using it; maybe its the ads and spam emails that I get from Myspace that has turned me off, i don't know.
I totally recommend Facebook over Myspace; it's a great way to be connected but not really.

Web 2.0: the machine is us/ing us

Web 2.0: the machine is us/ing us
Watch the video

Here at EKU Libraries we have implemented a training program to learn Web 2.0 (click here to learn about Web 2.0).

Well first off let me just say WOW!! This video is amazing. The first time I watched it I was overwhelmed and lost. The second time I understood the point of the video, this is what Learning Web 2.0 is all about. I have heard some of the things mentioned like html, but before didn't really understand it or for that matter really care. I am excited to learn all this cool technology, but to be honest I am scared (alot) .

First blog entry

Okay, I am here :-) I have created my blog. What will I talk about? I still don't know, but I am happy I have made it this far.
